On 4 November 1859, Sister Teresa Gesta, a Franciscan Tertiary in Foligno, Italy, died suddenly. Twelve days later, a sister in the convent reportedly heard agonised groans before Sister Teresa appeared through thick smoke. Saying, “Behold a proof of the mercy of God,” she pressed her hand against a door, leaving a dark, burned impression still preserved today. But the deeper message is not the handprint: Purgatory is God’s mercy—the final purification of those who die in His friendship before entering Heaven. It also reminds us of an ancient Christian duty: pray for the dead. Offer Masses, prayers and sacrifices, especially for forgotten souls. Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May they rest in peace. Amen.
