Each year, just after Christmas, a quiet and meaningful Catholic tradition appears on doorways around the world. Written in chalk above the entrance of a home are letters and numbers that may seem mysterious at first glance. But this simple inscription carries centuries of faith, prayer, and trust in Christ.
The Epiphany house blessing is traditionally done on or near January 6, the Feast of the Epiphany. It marks the moment when the Magi revealed Christ to the world and invites Him to dwell within the home for the coming year.
Using blessed chalk, families inscribe the current year along with the letters C M B. The numbers mark time, reminding us that every year belongs to God. The letters hold a beautiful double meaning. They recall the traditional names of the Magi, Caspar, Melchior, and Balthasar, who journeyed far to adore the newborn King. On Ideals and Falling Short of Them

[Spoiler warning: if you have not read Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, do so before returning to this essay.]
Even the best men will fall short of their ideals. Cynics incorrectly label this failure “hypocrisy” and suggest that it calls into question not just the man but also his ideals—and even the very idea of ideals.1 Few activities entertain small-hearted people as much as highlighting this gap between high moral aspirations and the conduct of fallen men. Better to ditch the ideals altogether, they imply.
But that’s the point: to aim at something higher than what is easily achieved. To be without ideals is to welcome mediocrity.
Sir Gawain and the Green Knight is a poem about ideals. The hero of this story aims high, and his aspirations are put to the test during the Christmas season when a giant green madman arrives at Camelot wanting to play a potentially bloody game. …

St. Sylvester served as pope from 314 to 335 A.D. Although this was 1700 years ago, the feats of St. Sylvester’s papacy make him a legendary figure.
As pope, St. Sylvester served during the reign of Emperor Constantine. Before Constantine, the emperors had been less than friendly to Christianity, most actively persecuting the early Christians. However, Constantine’s Edict of Milan gave Christians freedom of religion in 313, ushering in a new era for the Church.
Though this was a time of newfound liberty for the Church, it was also the time when she faced the first great heresy to challenge her teachings: Arianism. The Church responded with the Council of Nicaea, where she established the Nicene …

Traditional Catholics right now are not interested in namby-pamby generic catechesis, beginner what-is-Latin-Mass explainers, soft pastoral reassurances, endless Vatican II parsing, Trad drama, boring nostalgia, or over-heated prophecy talk. No more tabloid outrage.
This is sort of hard for me, being a rabble rouser and a banner carrier. (I know what I am.)
No, the #1 obsession is: authority and legitimacy. Who has real authority right now, and who doesn’t? Is obedience still a virtue when authority is corrupt? Devoted Catholics feel gaslit with all of the institutional language about “unity” and whatnot. Catholics want some sort of a moral permission to resist obvious evil without feeling schismatic.
