Leo XIV Appoints Third Man in Vatican - Praised the Abu Dhabi Document as New Foundation
On 30 March, Pope Leo XIV appointed Archbishop Paolo Rudelli as Substitute for General Affairs of the Secretariat of State, making him the Vatican’s third most senior official.
Born in Gazzaniga, Italy in 1970, Monsignor Rudelli was ordained to the priesthood in 1995. He studied at the Pontifical Gregorian University and joined the Vatican diplomatic service in 2001.
After serving in nunciatures in Ecuador and Poland, he worked in the Secretariat of State before being appointed Permanent Observer to the Council of Europe from 2014 to 2019. In 2019, Pope Francis personally consecrated him as a bishop and appointed him as Apostolic Nuncio.
He served as Nuncio to Zimbabwe (2020–2023) and to Colombia (2023–2026).
As a senior Vatican diplomat, Monsignor Rudelli is accustomed to maintaining message discipline and avoiding polarising issues.

"Amoris Laetitia" Was a "Breakthrough" for Church - Cardinal Schönborn
Pope Francis’ post-synodal apostolic exhortation Amoris Laetitia, published on April 8, 2016, was a “breakthrough” for the Church. This was stated by Cardinal Christoph Schönborn, 81, of Vienna, who had presented the document at the Vatican ten years ago, in an interview with Kathpress.at on March 30.
In a footnote, Francis "allowed" adulterers to grab Holy Communion using the case-by-case trick. Cardinal Schönborn commented: "That Pope Francis addressed the question of whether divorced and remarried persons may receive Communion only in a small footnote deeply moved me personally."
“When I take the document from my bookshelf or even just think about it, it still brings me to tears,” he added.
For many people in the Church - and for him personally - the document represented a “huge sigh of relief.” The reason, he explained, is that Francis speaks “about real life.”

Private Audience with Leo XIV for €500,000
Spain is preparing for the June visit of Pope Leo XIV and the country’s bishops have introduced a controversial fundraising model: major donors can gain exclusive access to the pope.
The Spanish Bishops’ Conference has created a five-tier donation system.
At the top, “Great Benefactors” (€500,000-€1 million) are promised a private meeting with the pope, a Vatican working session, and VIP seating at events.
“Benefactors” (€250,000-€500,000) receive similar perks, though without a private audience.
Lower tiers offer recognition, titles, or public acknowledgment.
Organizers say the goal is to reduce the burden on taxpayers, as the trip is expected to cost €15 - €30 million.
Donations are also tax-deductible, and sponsors are offered global visibility, with millions expected to attend or watch.

New Ferula of Leo XIV Removes Nails and Passion of Christ
On Palm Sunday, Leo XIV used again a ferula that features a risen Christ leaving the cross.
He has used it since 6 January 2026. On 9 January, the Office for the Liturgical Celebrations told VaticanNews.va that the cross "unites the mission of proclaiming the mystery of Christ on the cross with the glorious manifestation of the resurrection".
The ferula "presents Christ no longer bound by the nails of the Passion, but with his glorified body", according to the papal office.
And: "The Paschal Mystery thus becomes a source of hope for humanity because death no longer has any power over mankind since Christ redeemed everything he assumed."
