Pagan ritual during Eucharist in Canadian cathedral. On September 30, Notre-Dame Cathedral in Ottawa incorporated Indigenous ceremonial practices into a Eucharist. There was a purification or “smudging” rite at the beginning. Two Indigenous people approached the clergy in the sanctuary, including the bishop present, and fanned smoke from sacred plants (sweetgrass, cedar, sage and tobacco) toward them in a cleansing gesture. A four-directions prayer followed and the congregation turned to each direction before praying to “the Creator.” The Novus Ordo then continued. Feather rituals were also performed during the Prayers of the Faithful.

The Vatican will publish Pope Francis’s private diary on November 24. The book contains notes Bergoglio kept from December 1992 to August 2024, covering his years as bishop and cardinal, the 2005 and 2013 conclaves, and almost his entire papacy. It will be released in five languages across 94 countries. Soft porn author and Cardinal Víctor Fernández, one of Francis’s closest collaborators, edited and annotated the material. The publisher says it reveals Francis’s private fears, doubts, prayers and struggles, including reflections on death and conflict. Francis claimed in 2024 that he intended to destroy his most intimate notes himself rather than leave that job to someone after his death.

He spent 54 years in the Novus Ordo before discovering the Latin Mass, which “gives you space to sink into prayer and to contemplate and to meditate.” He also contrasted the two forms of the Mass: In the Latin Mass, “the sacrifice is very strongly visible.” But “in today’s Mass it is present but not as much in the forefront as in the Latin Mass.”

Unfortunately, the credibility of this conference was undercut by the way it attempted to delete one of its featured speakers simply for criticizing the Novus Ordo. The message this sends is troubling: you can have your traditional Catholic practices and traditions, so long as you ignore—or at least tolerate—the coexistence of an ever-evolving rite that, in important respects, contradicts what those traditions affirm. At that point, Catholics are effectively being asked to treat their rite as nothing more than a hat they put on occasionally, rather than as an integral expression of their Catholic faith and identity.
