After the 2018 Sino-Vatican agreement “terrible things happen to Catholics” in the Fujian province, an anonymous Chinese bishop who is unaffiliated with the Chinese state church ‘Patriotic Association’, told Anthony Clark for CatholicWorldReport.com on August 23. The bishop speaks of a “state of emergency”. As government influence over the bishops increases, “the integrity of the Catholic faith will suffer.” To “assure the survival of China’s Church,” new bishops have been “secretly consecrated.” The bishop says the faithful question Rome’s genuine concern for their “spiritual well-being” when the Holy See approves government-selected bishops whom they regard as too reliable to the state. Rev. Michael Pfleger, 77, was reinstated effective August 24 after the Archdiocese of Chicago's Independent Review Board completed its investigation. He is known nationally for his progressive activism. Cardinal Blase Cupich, 77, said the board, assisted by the Office of Child Protection and outside investigators, concluded there was “no reason to believe” Pfleger was guilty of the allegation. Cupich accepted the recommendation and returned him to ministry at St. Sabina. According to the Chicago Sun-Times reporting, a woman alleged that Pfleger sexually abused her when she was a girl attending St. Sabina's school sometime between 1993 and 1995. The allegation surfaced this July, and Pfleger was removed from ministry on July 11 while it was investigated. Rev. Pfleger denied it emphatically from the outset, calling it an “absolute lie.” Under archdiocesan policy, the allegation was reported to police, and the accuser was offered assistance through the church's Victim Assistance Ministry. …More

The Vatican announced Kelly’s appointment on Aug. 25. The dicastery was created by Pope Francis in 2016 to promote, as stated in its statutes, “the apostolate of the lay faithful, the pastoral care of the family and its mission according to God’s plan and for the safeguard and support of human life.” The dicastery is also the Vatican office responsible for organizing the international World Youth Day (WYD). Its members are not full-time staff and do not need to relocate to Rome. Rather, they attend plenary sessions in Rome and vote on decrees. Preliminary Recourse of FSSPX Rejected: The Vatican’s deadline to respond to the Priestly Fraternity of St. Pius X (FSSPX) regarding its preliminary recourse against the July 2 decree declaring six bishops automatically excommunicated has now passed, notes @Michael Haynes The FSSPX submitted its recourse to the Holy See on July 11. Under canon law, the competent authority had 30 days to respond. With that period now expired without a decision, the FSSPX can proceed to the next stage of its canonical challenge. Canon 1735 provides that when no decision is issued within the prescribed 30 days, the time limit for presenting hierarchical recourse begins to run from the 30th day.
