I draw this reflection from an interview with the Pope in 2014. At that time, I was preparing a book about the persecution of Christians in the 21st century, which I would publish in 2018 under the title “S.O.S. Christians.” The objective of my book was twofold: on the one hand, to denounce the systematic persecution suffered by believers in Christ; and on the other hand, to break what Julio María Sanguinetti, in his foreword, called an “ominous informational ostracism.”
More than ten years later, the Holy Father’s statement has not only not been disproven, but it has been painfully and tragically confirmed: in the 21st century there are more Christian martyrs than in the times of the catacombs, in a bloodbath that seems unstoppable. Suffocation awaited a young man with Down syndrome when the eroded surface of a toxic sewage tank crumbled beneath his feet.
Joseph Vander Woude would have died alone in the cramped tank surrounded by toxic fumes, but his father jumped in, pushing him toward the surface with his last breath.
Even as his lungs filled with toxic gases, Tom called out to the farmhand who was trying to pull Joseph out.
“You pull, I’ll push,” he said.
Tom eventually faded into unconsciousness, still propping Joseph up until emergency responders pulled them both out of the 7-foot-deep tank.

The Advent of Our Lord is celebrated for four weeks to signify that His coming is fourfold: He came to us in the flesh, He comes into our hearts, He comes to us at death, and He will come at the Last Judgment. The fourth week is not completed, because the glory of the elect to be bestowed at the last coming of Our Lord will never end.
While the coming of Our Lord is fourfold, the Church turns especially to two of them, the coming of Our Lord in the flesh and His coming at the Last Judgment. Thus, the Advent fast is in part a fast of rejoicing because of Christ’s coming in the flesh, the Incarnation; at the same time it is in part a fast of contrition, looking to the supreme coming of Christ at the Last Judgment.

This illuminated manuscript is a meditation on the Virgin Mary inspired by a vision of St. Hildegard of Bingen, taken from her major work Scivias. In it we can see the exalted role Our Lady had in the Church already in the 1100s.
Our Lady sits enthroned above the choirs of Angels. In the next layer of the Saint's vision of the Church Triumphant, the Virgin rules in radiant majesty over the Apostles, Patriarchs and Prophets, Virgins, Confessors and Martyrs.
Clearly St Hildegard saw Our Lady as Queen of the Universe, playing a powerful role in the sanctification of men. She is the link between the Created and the Uncreated, above the Angels and mediatrix between God and man. She viewed the Virgin as the bridge between Heaven and earth.
Our Lady’s role in salvation is clear to St. Hildgarde: “Because a woman instituted death; The luminous Virgin has abolished it,” she wrote in her Antiphon 7.

A creek in one of my favorite places in the world, the Alerces National Park in Futaleufú (Chubut) Argentina.
I was about 14 years old the last time I visited my home town. On a certain day during that vacation I was with a group climbing up a hill by the Rio Grande (also known by its native name Futaleufú). This is not the world famous Rio Grande marking the border between Mexico and the United States, its a different one. In fact, many rivers are called Rio Grande. Our forefathers did not have much of an imagination to name courses of water! Back to the story. The group was climbing up the hill to reach an observation point where one can see the beautiful cascading waters (the rapids). That was long ago (ca. 1967) Today there is a dam in that area that submerged the beautiful rapids. As I climbed with the group of about ten persons the big lemonade I had that afternoon began insisting to rejoin mother nature. That prosaic need to relieve myself kept me behind. Today, I recognize every American celebrating December 8 as a Holy Day honoring the faith, humility, and love of Mary, mother of Jesus and one of the greatest figures in the Bible.
On the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, Catholics celebrate what they believe to be Mary’s freedom from original sin as the mother of God. She first entered recorded history as a young woman when, according to Holy Scripture, the Angel Gabriel greeted her in the village of Nazareth with news of a miracle: “Hail, favored one! The Lord is with you,” announcing that “you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name him Jesus.”
In one of the most profound and consequential acts of history, Mary heroically accepted God’s will with trust and humility: “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord.
