In an interview with Katholisch.de, published September 23, Van Megen, who spent nearly 16 years in Africa before moving to Berlin, said tensions over Germany’s Synodal Path run “throughout the entire universal Church.” The Dutch prelate also sees parallels with secularization in the Netherlands. “The Germans, in my impression, often want too much too quickly,” he said, questioning whether reforms are meant to “save” the Church: “I would consider that an illusion.”

Cardinal Mario Grech says the Church is “synodal by nature”, but also “hierarchical by nature.” The baptized meet to “make decisions together”, but the bishop must ensure those decisions are correct, and the Pope does so for the universal Church. Speaking to Domradio.de on September 22, Cardinal Grech said there is “room for everyone”, but Germany’s proposed Synodal Conference still requires “careful” examination. Synodality, he said, is still “developing”, but the Synod itself is already over. Emmanuel Macron’s decision not to attend the papal Eucharists during Leo XIV’s visit to France is in keeping with France’s state religion of laicism. Hosts from tabernacle scattered across a town square. On September 19, unknown perpetrators entered the Sacred Heart of Mary parish church in Guitiriz, Lugo, Spain, forced open the tabernacle and stole the silver ciborium containing hosts. They were later found scattered outside in the town square. The Diocese of Mondoñedo-Ferrol described the incident as a grave profanation of the Eucharist. The parish filed a complaint and the Guardia Civil opened an investigation. Investigators are reportedly reviewing security cameras from nearby businesses. Bishop Fernando García Cadiñanos will celebrate a Eucharist of reparation at the church on 29 September.

Cardinal McElroy hails Leo XIV’s shift from “unfortunate” Catechism teaching. Cardinal Robert McElroy of Washington, writing at NcROnline.org on September 23, said that “during the past six months, we have witnessed a remarkable transformation in Catholic teaching on war.” McElroy praised the “tremendous progress” made during that period toward “eclipsing the role of the just war tradition in Catholic teaching.” “The just war framework has been distorted to become a source of justification for those inclined to go to war, rather than a constraint on war,” McElroy claimed. Then this: “One of the accelerants for this trend is the unfortunate statement in the Catechism of the Catholic Church that the evaluation of the just war criteria belongs to those who have responsibility for the common good.” The cardinal's statement comes in the wake of Leo XIV’s encyclical 'Magnifica Humanitas'. Funeral for a male dancer turns into a comedy performance. Dancer, choreographer, and social worker Thierry Parmentier, 74, was given a funeral in the Catholic church of Caldogno, Italy, on June 24. He had planned the event himself, including its music, choreography and performances. Belgian-born, Parmentier had lived in the Vicenza area for over 40 years and staged productions to raise funds for AIDS research. The church was filled with Doctor Clown volunteers, biodance and holistic practitioners, and stilt-walkers. Don Gigi Maistrello, chaplain to Vicenza prison, preached the homily. After the funeral, an animated procession accompanied the coffin to the parish centre, where the farewell continued with music, dance and performances.

In 1947, Italian nurse and postulant Pierina Gilli reported a series of apparitions of the Blessed Virgin in Montichiari, Italy. In one, Gilli said Mary appeared with three swords piercing her heart, symbolizing the suffering and spiritual failures among priests and religious. In a later vision, the swords were replaced by three roses — white, red and yellow — representing prayer, sacrifice and penance. She reported another series of apparitions in 1966 in nearby Fontanelle. In July 2024, the Vatican’s Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith granted a nihil obstat to the devotion associated with Gilli’s experiences and messages, allowing it to be promoted publicly while stopping short of declaring the reported apparitions supernatural.
Leo XIV claims that Christ founded a “religious movement” - in direct contradiction to Church teaching and the Gospel. The recently published document The Path of Hope was signed by the heads of three Vatican dicasteries and approved by Leo XIV on 22 June. It states in §10: “Early Christianity developed from the movement initiated by Jesus and his disciples, distinguishing itself from the various forms of Judaism over time.” That’s the liberal Protestant view associated with figures such as Albert Schweitzer. It clashes with propositions explicitly condemned by St Pius X in Lamentabili sane. Condemned sentences are: §59: Christ “inaugurated a religious movement adapted to, or to be adapted to, different times and places.” §60: “Christian doctrine was originally Judaic.
