An unusual controversy has erupted in the Church in Angola after an anonymous letter sent to the Apostolic Nunciature in Luanda called for the next bishop of Mbanza Kongo to be white, reports the Substack.com-account The Pillar (August 7). The authors argue that the historic diocese has not developed sufficiently under its three Angolan bishops, while insisting the request is not racially motivated. The Diocese of Mbanza Kongo has rejected the suggestion that the letter represents its faithful. Angolan Catholic commentator Paulo Viana believes the dispute may actually be about dissatisfaction with Bishop Vicente Carlos Kiaziku, whose health problems have kept him away for extended periods, and the battle over his eventual successor.
