As France moves toward legalising euthanasia, Leo XIV spoke about the unconditional value of human life. Speaking today at UNESCO in Paris, Leo XIV warned against a society that measures human worth by efficiency and casts aside those deemed no longer productive. “Our dignity is not destroyed by illness or suffering, nor is it dependent upon our abilities,” he said. Even in “the most vulnerable circumstances, even to death itself,” human dignity remains undiminished. The sick, suffering and dying, he said, must receive “loving care at every stage of life.”
