Leo XIV Promotes Homosex Activist as Italian Archbishop
Monsignor Dianin was born on October 29, 1962, in Teolo, in the Diocese of Padua. He earned a doctorate in Moral Theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome and was ordained a priest in June 1987.
In 2021, he was appointed Bishop of Chioggia and was ordained a bishop in January 2022.
Rev Dianin collaborated in intellectual environments with compromised theologians such as Maurizio Chiodi or Pierangelo Sequeri. Chiodi became internationally controversial after legitimizing contraception. Similarly, Sequeri was involved in revising Catholic sexual ethics.
Amoris Laetitia Preparation
On March 14, 2015, Rev Dianin gave a lecture on the Eucharist for adulterers, as reported by FamigliaCristiana.it.
At that time, he was the rector of the Seminary of Padua. He supported a pastoral path for divorced and remarried that would "allow" them to grab the Eucharist, without commiting to live “as brothers and sisters”.
The talk was ahead of and preparatory to the Family Synod in October 2015.
"Sexual Abstinence No Solution"
In 2017, Fr. Dianin defended the post-synodal exhortation 'Amoris Laetitia' (April 2016) in an 18-page article titled “Accompagnare, integrare, discernere. Riflessioni sul capitolo VIII di Amoris Laetitia”, published in the theological journal Studia Patavina.
One of his central claims is that “pastoral practice” can gradually illuminate the theology. He argues that pastoral discernment and concrete situations should shape the Church’s practical response to divorced and remarried (singular case trick).
Discussing the requirement that such couples live “as brother and sister,” he writes that “lack of intimacy could endanger the new union” and that “the solution could not be sexual abstinence, which could place the spousal bond at risk.”
He further describes the second union as “a bond of love” that “finds in the sexual encounter nourishment, strength and support.”
The article repeatedly argues that subjective responsibility may differ from objective irregularity, and opens the possibility that some divorced-and-remarried couples may receive sacramental access after a process of discernment.
Dianin adds that “it is no longer possible to say that all those in so-called irregular situations live in a state of mortal sin.”
Later, he claims that “the adultery of a married person who betrays the partner is different from the sexual relations of a divorced and remarried person who arrived at this condition through a troubled and painful journey.”
He questions that “the sexual act of a divorced and remarried couple is equivalent to adultery.”
Reinterpretation of 'Humanae Vitae'
In July 2018, Rev Dianin wrote on DiocesiPadova.it that ‘Humanae Vitae’ against contraception should be understood in the broader context of the Second Vatican Council and later bishops’ conferences, not in isolation.
He called for “a process of pastoral discernment similar to the approach encouraged by Pope Francis in Amoris Laetitia”.
Married couples should make own decisions about procreation based on their conscience.
Accepted Invitation to Gay Pride
In September 2020, Giampaolo Dianin — then rector of the Seminary of Padua — was announced as a participant in an event titled: “Church and homosexuality”.
It was part of the Padova Pride event, one of the largest homosexual events in Italy.
The announced panel was:
- Rev Dianin
- the ex-priest and homosexual Francesco Lepore
- Luciano Moia, a homosexual activist employed by the Italian bishops’ newspaper Avvenire.
They were supposed to speak about the role of homosexuality within ecclesiastical institutions, between an “aperitif with live performances” and the “grand dinner show”.
Only after conservative outcry about a seminary rector at a gay pride stage, the event was postponed to October.
LaNuovaBq.it had called the event “a new step forward in the triumphant march of the Catholic-gay alliance.”
Distinction Between Concupiscence and Sin “Problematic”
In December 2024, now Bishop Dianin of Chioggia spoke on the inclusion of homosexuals at a study day organized by the Triveneto Theological Faculty.
He called on the Church to welcome homosexuals as outlined in the controversial Chapter VIII of ‘Amoris Laetitia’.
According to SettimanaNews.it, his analysis highlighted an “agony” between the desire for homosexual inclusion and fidelity to doctrine. This agony, he stated, is also a sign of hope and preparation for a new season of dialogue.
Bishop Dianin wanted to re-examine the distinction between inclination and behaviour. For him this is problematic because in the sexual sphere body and identity are deeply intertwined.
Homosexual Infiltration Initiatives
After the 2023 homosexual pamphlet ‘Fiducia Supplicans’, Bishop Dianin’s Diocese of Chioggia published a favorable explanatory material claiming that “we are facing a development”: “The new declaration ‘Fiducia Supplicans’ now makes it possible to bless couples formed by persons of the same sex”.
In December 2025, Bishop Dianin participated in Rovigo in a meeting on “accompanying LGBT persons”, reported the diocesan newspaper Nuova Scintilla.
As Delegate for Italian Seminaries within the Italian Bishops’ Conference, Monsignor Dianin belongs to the leadership ecosystem behind the new 2025 Italian seminary norms.
The controversy erupted because the new document: “La formazione dei presbiteri nelle Chiese in Italia” was softening the ban on homosexual seminarians.
That Ratio, publicly presented by Bishop Dianin, claimed on homosexual candidates that an admission to seminary should not be reduced only to homosexuality and must be read in the candidate’s “global personality.”
