Putin Dealt a "Slap in the Face" to Leo XIV – Archbishop Gänswein

Archbishop Georg Gänswein, the Apostolic Nuncio to the Baltic States, said that Russia had effectively delivered a slap in the face to Pope Leo XIV by rejecting the Vatican's offer of mediation in the war against Ukraine.

In an interview with Herder Korrespondenz in January, Archbishop Gänswein revealed that shortly after his election in May, Pope Leo XIV had offered to mediate in the conflict between Ukraine and Russia.

While Ukraine accepted the proposal, Russia rejected it. "With that, the door to peace negotiations under Vatican mediation was, for the time being, closed — bluntly put, a slap in the face for the Pope and the Vatican," he said.Consequently, a papal visit to Ukraine currently appears hardly feasible, he added.

Recent developments suggest that hopes for a ceasefire are fading: "The past weeks have clearly shown that the fighting has intensified. A ceasefire seems an increasingly distant prospect. There is an obvious lack of serious willingness for peace on the Russian side."

Archbishop Gänswein added that people in the Baltic states fear that Russia could attack, and wonder whether the European Union and NATO would truly defend them. These fears, he said, revive painful memories of decades of Soviet oppression.

He added that, while Vatican diplomacy wants to promote peace, its influence may seem limited in real political terms.

I would like to see the link where Putin said that please. Is this hear say? Or is it a fact he said it. And if so, I understand why Putin said that. After talks with Trump, Zelsensky sent 91 drones to attack Putin's Official Resident. Sounds like the US gave more intel to Ukraine. And as one person put it. It's not time for any peace or rifts to be mended. It's all GOD'S Will. When The Consecration of Russia to The Immaculate Heart of Mary is done. Then there will be peace. Not until then. And talks are a waste as Zelensky obeys his masters who pay him well with tax payers money.

Although wary of Putin, I suspect it is less intended as a 'slap in the face' as it is a splash of (holy) water in the face to Prevost implying, "Get your own house in order, first, before you seek to mend your neighbor's fence." I seem to recall something about not obsessing over the cinder in your neighbor's eye, when you have a plank in your own.

Looks like Putin can see straight through Prevost and can see how ineffectual he is in real terms!!! Too bad most Catholics can't see that!
