Why Modern Marriage Crumbles Beneath the Rebellion of Decades of Lawlessness
You sit in your houses, weeping over the wreckage of your broken vows, pointing your soft, therapeutic fingers at "poor communication" and "unmet emotional needs." You treat marriage like a marketplace for mutual self-admiration, a perpetual indulgence of the passions, and a playground for unrestrained desire.
Repent. You are looking at the smoke while ignoring the fire.
What you call a "modern marriage" is no marriage at all. It is nothing more than a glorified shack-up between two so-called equals—the terrible, rotten fruit of the 1960s sexual revolution, which tore down the moral fences of Christendom and baptized lawlessness as liberty.
If you stripped away the cowardice of this age and listened to the unyielding voice of the ancient Fathers—confirmed and systematically sealed by the angelic doctor Thomas Aquinas—you would see why your dwellings are falling into the dust. You have committed a double rebellion against the order of God: you have crowned the inherited poison of concupiscence as a “holy sacrament,” and you have cast off the natural, divinely ordained headship and superior governance of the husband.
Consider, first, what you have done to the flesh. The Fathers and the Scholastics, staring into the abyss of post-Fall human nature, did not romanticize the impulses of the body. They knew that when Adam fell, the flesh rebelled against the spirit, introducing concupiscentia—a turbulent, disordered rebellion that turns the boiling urges of the bedchamber into a spiritual hazard. To Augustine and Aquinas alike, the physical union of husband and wife was never an intrinsic good to be chased for its own gratification; it was a narrow, reluctant concession, a firewall erected by God against total debauchery. Aquinas rigorously confirmed that because concupiscence clouds the rational will during the act, carnal intercourse carries moral fault if pursued for its own sake, justified only when strictly directed to procreation.
Yet the revolutionaries of the 1960’s took this very symptom of human infirmity, this dangerous concession, and placed it upon the altar as the god of your “covenant.” You demand endless carnal and emotional self-actualization, treating the unbridled pursuit of bodily pleasure as the measure of “love.” You cannot build a sanctuary upon the systematic cultivation of the exact appetites that ruin the soul.
And look what you have done to order. By reducing marriage to an “equal partnership” of two autonomous peers, you have overthrown the law of subjection, flattening the household into a pathetic war of competing wills. You despise the natural hierarchy established by God and affirmed by the tradition, wherein the husband—endowed with the strength of reason and governance—exercises true headship, and the wife fulfills her noble role in quiet obedient submission.
In your arrogance, you call this headship oppression. But without an objective anchor of authority, without a head to direct the body, your homes have become miniature tyrannies of pride. Every dispute is a rebellion because you have replaced sacred duty with the delusion of “equality.”
You built your unions on the shifting sand of ego, carnal appetite, and mutual defiance, mirroring the transient passions of the street rather than the eternal law of Heaven. If there is to be any salvation for the family, hierarchy (male headship) and chastity (mortification of carnal desires) must be fiercely restored. Lay down your modern delusions. Return to the sober austerity of the Fathers and the Scholastics, submit the flesh to the spirit, and reestablish the rightful order of the household—or continue to watch your civilization collapse into the ash heap of its own unchecked desires.
