The Pope does not count on Cardinal Gambetti to continue as Archpriest of St. Peter's Basilica

Since February, Cardinal Mauro Gambetti's appointment as Vicar General of His Holiness for Vatican City, Archpriest of the Papal Basilica of St. Peter in the Vatican and President of the Fabric of St. Peter has expired.

Expired ad quinquennium mandate

On Saturday, February 20, 2021, the Holy See made public his appointment ad quinquennium, which means that Pope Leo XIV should have made the decision whether to renew it or not.

The Pope has told him that he is not counting on him

However, there has been no public announcement so far regarding his continued tenure as Archpriest of St. Peter's Basilica and his other positions. In this context, with his appointment already expired, Vatican sources have told Religión Confidencial that the Pope has informed the Italian cardinal that he is not counting on him and does not plan to renew his appointment as Archpriest of St. Peter's Basilica.

Economic management under scrutiny

As this publication reported a few weeks ago, there is some unease within the Holy See regarding the financial management of the main papal basilica. Vatican sources confirm to this publication that St. Peter's financial assets have declined drastically in recent years.

Following in the footsteps of Cardinal Krajewski

Another Vatican source indicates that Cardinal Mauro Gambetti could suffer the same fate as Cardinal Konrad Krajewski, until recently the Papal Almoner and, since 2022, the first Prefect of the Dicastery for Charity. Leo XIV appointed him Archbishop of Łódź and could do something similar with Gambetti soon, sending him as bishop to an Italian diocese or archdiocese.

Cardinal Mauro Gambetti is the first cardinal of the Order of Friars Minor Conventual in 159 years. On February 22, 2013, he was appointed Custodian of the General Custody of the Sacred Convent of St. Francis in Assisi, Italy. In 2017, he was elected President of the Mediterranean Federation of Provincial Ministers (FIMP). On November 22, 2020, he was ordained a bishop, choosing as his episcopal motto the words Omnibus subiecti in Caritate (All things subject to charity).

On November 28, 2020, Pope Francis created him Cardinal, assigning him the diaconate of the Most Holy Name of Mary in the Forum of Trajan in Rome.

I still have not forgotten how he treated the body of pope Benedict.
