Transgender "Priest" Gives Sermon At National Cathedral.

geobeats on Jun 23, 2014 On Sunday, June 22nd, the Reverend Cameron Partridge became the first transgender religious leader to give a sermon at the Washington National Cathedral.

"For the first time in the history of the National Cathedral, an openly transgender priest preached from the pulpit as a part of the cathedral's celebration of equality during the LGBT community's pride month." [Via WJLA]

In his address he encouraged people to rid themselves of shame about who they are and centered much of his talk around the idea of revelation.

As biblical example of the community's struggle, he cited the story of Hagar, a handmaiden who birthed the child of Abraham and was exiled with their son.

He encouraged support among the group and the widespread acceptance of it.

The service was presided over by the Right Reverend Gene Robinson, the first Episcopal Bishop to be openly gay.

Readings and prayers were offered by numerous individuals from the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community as part of the cathedral's LGBT Pride Month celebration.

The cathedral's dean, the Very Reverend Gary Hall, said that he hoped the service would convey support for greater equality for transgendered people.
