Our Lady of Akita Observed to Shed Tears
Seitai Hoshikai (Institute of the Handmaids of the Hoy Eucharist) is located in the suburbs of Akita City.
Many people from every corner in Japan and overseas visit its chapel housing the statue of Our Lady of Akita, which is said to shed tears.
The statue made of katsura tree was created by a local sculptor Saburo Wakasa with a method called “one-knife carving.”
A Japanese garden and promenade next to the convent are well maintained and create a calm atmosphere.
From nearby Satomi Onsan spa to the convent, you can walk while admiring beautiful rural landscape.
Location: Yuzawadai, Soegawa, Akita City
Access: 20 minutes by bus from Akita Station on Akita Onsen route or Nibetsu Resort Koen route, and then, 10 minute walk from the bus stop to the convent.
