New York Closes Parishes: One day after the canonization of two popes closely related to the Second Vatican Council the Archdiocese of New York has announced that it will close more parishes. 21 parishes were already shut down in 2007. Archdiocesan officials acknowledge that the new closures could be far more significant. Among the locations at risk is Holy Innocents in Manhattan, the only parish were the Old Rite is celebrated daily.

Honour: In February Spains's interior minister, Jorge Fernández Díaz, conferred the gold medal of police merit – which is normally reserved for police who died in terrorist attacks – to Our Lady of Love in Málaga. Fernández lauded Our Lady and her congregation for "maintaining a close collaboration with police, particularly during the acts celebrated in Holy Week, and for sharing police values such as dedication, caring, solidarity and sacrifice". Infuriated secularists have now taken the minister to court. In 2012 he granted the Guardia Civil's highest honour to Zaragoza's Virgin of Pillar. Fernández is a married member of the Opus Dei.

Vocation: 24-year-old Clifford Heyer a middle school English teacher at Little Rock’s Christ the King School announced on April 16 to his pupils that he will enter Subiaco Benedictine Abbey in Logan County, Arkansas. When asked why the Benedictines, he said, “In short, because God said so.” Christ the King Parish has gained a reputation for supporting vocations. It currently has eight men studying for the priesthood for the Diocese of Little Rock.

Saint Catherine of Siena: Yesterday and today the Church celebrates Saint Catherine of Siena according to the new and old calendar. Saint Catherine received from Christ the following words about the sin of homosexuality: “This not only causes Me nausea, but displeases even the demons themselves, whom these miserable creatures have chosen as their lords.” And: “It is disagreeable to the demons, not because evil displeases them and they find pleasure in good, but because their nature is angelic and thus is repulsed upon seeing such an enormous sin being committed. It is true that it is the demon who hits the sinner with the poisoned arrow of lust, but when a man carries out such a sinful act, the demon leaves.”
